Newhouse 3
"Newhouse Communications Center III" by Ennead Architects - Polshek Partnership Architects , 2005 - 2007
Newhouse III is the third building in the three-building complex that houses the Newhouse School of Public Communications. The building connects the Newhouse I and Newhouse II buildings, thus completing Samuel I. Newhouse’s original vision to create a multi-building complex for the S.I. Newhouse School Of Public Communications. At the center of the building is a three-story atrium illuminated by natural light from four 18 x 18 foot canted skylights and full-height glass curtain walls in the north and south. Newhouse III also includes the “Liberty Wrap,” a glass curtain wall covering the second floor of the west side of the building featuring the words of the First Amendment etched in six-foot high letters.
The construction of Newhouse III completed S. I Newhouse’s original vision for a “campus-within-a-campus” devoted to communications. The building was made possible by a $15 million dollar gift from The Samuel I. Newhouse Foundation in 2003. Additionally, the building’s 350-seat auditorium was funded by alumna Joyce Hergenhan. On September 19, 2007, acting U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Roberts delivered the dedication address in front of the “Liberty Wrap” emblazoned with the words of the First Amendment.
