Orange Grove

"Orange Grove" by Alumni Association & Office of Alumni Relations , 2003

Syracuse University’s Orange Grove is a pedestrian corridor comprised of engraved orange granite blocks featuring tree-lined walkways, seating areas, and pieces of art. The Orange Grove is a gathering place for students, faculty, and alumni, and is considered a site of remembrance and an alumni landmark honoring the University’s alumni, staff, friends, and fans. Located in front of Bowne Hall and adjacent to the Quad, the Grove was created by the Syracuse University alumni association and the SU Office of Alumni Relations as a tribute to the many individuals who make Syracuse University the outstanding institution it is today. In keeping with the theme of honoring SU, all of the engraving and construction work to create the Orange Grove was done by companies owned by SU alumni and an SU graduate designed the site.

While most of the pavers are 12”x12”, The Founders Walk, added in 2011, is comprised of larger pavers which encompass the Grove. The pavers which comprise the Grove allow these names to be forever “etched” into the heart of the Syracuse University campus. Arnold Paley’s Banner statue was purchased by the Alumni Orange Grove fund as part of a sculpture contest and added to the Grove in 2004. Two SU graduates also created a tradition within the Grove of tying orange ribbons on the trees in the spring. It is said that graduating seniors who tie an orange ribbon, representing a wish, in the Orange Grove during the week before Commencement will have their wish come true.
