Einhorn Family Walk
"Einhorn Family Walk" by Sasaki Associates , May 2016 - August 2016
The Einhorn Family Walk stretches from Newhouse to Bird Complex. The walk includes benches, trees, LED lighting, and a grading strategy to maximize accessibility at one of the steepest parts of campus. The walk also includes six terraces or “outdoor rooms” where students and other members of the SU community can take some time to sit and relax, study, or socialize outdoors. The walk replaces what used to be the busy roads of University Place, transforming the area into a vibrant public space. The walk includes several features to make sure it can be enjoyed year round, including Syracuse’s harsh winter months. The walk is positioned to get as much sun as possible, the seating is made from wood to prevent it from getting as cold as stone seating does in the winter, and there is a heated paving system at key crossings and other areas to melt the snow more quickly and improve walkability.
The Einhorn Family Walk was funded by University Trustee Steven (’64, G’67) and Sherry Einhorn (’65). Prior to its construction, University Place was a busy street with heavy vehicle traffic. The goal for creating the walk was to help open up campus, make it more accessible, and thus help achieve the Framework Plan’s goal to create inclusive spaces on campus. Gina Ford, Sasaki Associates principal on the project, explained that the goal for the walk is to provide “a celebratory space where student life could flow out of the classroom—a space for creativity, conversation, and collaboration.” To do so, the road was closed to traffic and replaced with a brick walkway. Additionally, the slope of the walk was evened out and level terraces were created to provide places for wheelchairs to sit.
Steven L. Einhorn earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology from Syracuse University’s College of Arts and Sciences in 1964. He then received his bachelor of architecture degree from the Syracuse University’s School of Architecture in 1967. Sherry Goldberg Einhorn, Steven Einhorn’s wife, is also a SU alum and earned her education degree in 1965. Steven Einhorn's successful career includes founding, developing, and selling two global private equity investment companies. He was CEO and chairman for EYP Mission Critical Facilities and EYP Architecture and Engineering. Due to his management and design accomplishments, Steven Einhorn was elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects due to his management strategy and design accomplishments. Einhorn is deeply involved in a wide variety of community activities. Within Syracuse University, Steven Einhorn serves as the chair for the Campus Framework Advisory Group, a team of trustees, students, faculty and staff charged with imagining a transformative, student-centric vision for the Syracuse University campus. He has been a member of the Board of Trustees since 2013. Steven Einhorn is also a member of the School of Architecture’s Advisory Board and Executive Committee, the Student Affairs Committee and the Benefactor and Visionary Gift Clubs.
Steven and Sherry Goldberg Einhorn also generously supported the construction of the Einhorn 21st Century Studio in the School of Architecture, a design education studio intended to support a wide array of teaching styles and rapidly changing technologies, as well as the establishment of the Einhorn Lecture, an annual talk given by a professional whose firm embodies an innovative approach to the integration of strategic business planning and design. Steven Einhorn is also president of the board of directors for the University Foundation of the University at Albany; designer of the Albany Holocaust Memorial; president of the board of trustees for Congregation Beth Emeth; and recipient of the David Ben Gurion Award for his dedication to Israel.
